Sadlers Creek State Park – Lake Hartwell

November 7th – 8th 2020

Welcome to the 2nd Year of the Sadlers Creek Stumble! This event is sure to bring out speed in our experienced runners and bring out the best in our first timers! Sadlers Creek State Park sits on 395 acres on a peninsula that extends into Lake Hartwell, one of the Savannah River reservoirs. Campsites available on Lake Hartwell at one of lakefront sites, observing wildlife and recreational water sports are only a small sampling of activities to be enjoyed in the park. The event will be run on a 6.55 Mile loop that encompasses the entire park (85% trail- 15% road). The course will run right pass campground loops 1 & 3 during each loop.
At this time we are still a go for the Sadlers Creek Race Series with a few modifications to adhere to state park policies and to provide an opportunity to race during the pandemic  We will NOT be offering an aid station at this time so all runners need to bring any food/nutrition they will need during the event with them. We will have a water source available during each loop.

Packet Pickup

Please arrive 90 minutes prior to your race start to ensure you can locate parking, bathrooms, packet pickup and set up your personal aid station if needed. You can pick up your race bib and any apparel items purchased race morning near our timing tent located near our start/finish line. Apparel will be for sale on race day.

Bib # & Timing Chip

Please locate the Bib # Sheet at packet pickup. It will be organized by distance and in alphabetical order. Find your name that corresponds with your assigned bib # and give that number to one of our volunteers at packet pickup. Please make sure that your bib is on the front of your body and is visible when you cross the finish line. Please make sure to return your timing chip and bib along with the reusable BibBoard to the correct storage bin located at the finish line prior to getting your finish medal. Participants who lose or neglect to return their timing chip will be asked to mail it in or pay $25 to have the reusable chip replaced.

Race Swag

All race participants will receive an Upstate Ultra Sticker and a unique hand made finisher award. Not everyone likes shirts so we have provided an option to purchase an Upstate Ultra Tri-Blend Shirt, Performance Socks, Trucker Hat, or Trail Buff.

Sadlers Creek Course Map HERE

The course is a 6.55 mile loop with only a half mile section where runners will be double backing. The course climbs 190 Feet per 6 mile loop. (Relatively flat with a few mole hills) From the course you will expect to see Lake Hartwell on several occasions, deer roaming the peninsula, and tall pines towering over the lake! This will be one of your fastest 50ks to date or one of your most enjoyable looped 24 hour runs. If you are a beginner or love the shorter distances we have a 10k and half marathon option. The course will have a series of directional arrows that will be placed at all intersections. Please follow all directional arrows to stay on course. In the event that you make a wrong turn please backtrack to your original spot of confusion. Cutting the course (even if unintentionally will lead to a disqualification)

Race Awards

Top 3 Male and Female will receive a custom hand made award by our partner of Next Up Opportunity! Each finisher will receive a finisher medal that will be branded with the race logo and come with a custom race patch on the backside! Camping!

Spots are limited and can be reserved through the registration storefront.Many of the sites have power and water. The race will run along Campground 1 & 3. You can have up to 6 Individuals per site along with two tents and two cars max. Reservation includes both Friday and Saturday. Non Rustic sites have a picnic table, grill, fire ring, and the park is pet friendly.

Address / Parking

ALL Participants that are staying overnight who are not reserving a campsite must purchase a parking or field pass. This pass covers your entry into the park and field camping for the Friday and Saturday. Daily Park passes are $2 per person. Children are free. Aid Stations

Water will be available but we will not be offering a food aid station. All runners need to bring their necessary nutritional needs with them to set up a personal aid station near the start/finish line.

Eco-Standard

In an effort to be good stewards to mother nature we will not have any of the following items at ANY of our events. This is in an effort to reduce the carbon footprint being placed by endurance events throughout the world. Please have a cup or hydration bottle if you will need to consume water/nutrition during the event. Please bring your own fork/spoon for any post race meals. Please bring your own bags for items collected at the race. Please make use of old safety pins or our new Bib Boards that will be available for the timing chip only.

Walters Wins Bassmaster Eastern Open on Lake Hartwell

Patrick Walters of Summerville put together a solid final-day catch Friday and captured the Bassmaster Eastern Open tournament fished on Lake Hartwell. Walters, a regular on the Bassmaster Elite circuit, had the third-largest catch of the 12 competitors who fished the final day with five bass that weighed 13 pounds, 11 ounces and finished the three-day event with a total of 44-5. He earned $42,267.

Jayme Rampey of Liberty placed second, almost two pounds behind Walters with a total of 42-6, and earned $20,287. Andy Ricker of Pomaria was third at 40-12, winning $14,320.

This is Walters’ third Bassmaster victory. He and fellow University of South Carolina angler Tyler All won the 2017 Carhartt Bassmaster College Series Southern Regional presented by Bass Pro Shops at Winyah Bay. Walters also won the 2018 Basspro.com Bassmaster Central Open on the Red River.

“I really didn’t know how this week was going to pan out,” Walters said. “You can’t predict it; you just have to go fishing every single day and fish as hard as you can.

“That Red River definitely solidified that I could do it. But to do it here in Anderson, S.C., on Lake Hartwell, I absolutely love this lake. This means the world to me.”

Mark Grizzle of Cumming, Ga., won the co-angler division with a total weight of 21-10 and won $18,927. Cody Wilson of Ladson was third in the co-angler division with a catch of 18-5 and won $3,340. J.W. Smith of Goose Creek won the $250 Phoenix Boats Big Bass prize among co-anglers for his 6-0 catch.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Campground will get a massive face-lift in Anderson

ANDERSON COUNTY, SC (WSPA)–The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Campground on Lake Hartwell, will get a massive face-lift after being

closed for decades.

Anderson County will work with Lake Hartwell Development Group, LLC to revamp the old Asbury Park and Campground, which will soon be called the

‘Shores of Asbury’. When you think of big water attractions in Anderson County, Green Pond Landing comes to mind first. However, only a few miles away, the rebirth of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ campground is underway. “It has been sitting idle for more than 20 years,” said Burriss Nelson, Director of Anderson County Economic Development.

“We think this is a great opportunity to revitalize a recreational area on Lake Hartwell and there’s a demand for it,” Nelson said. “My father-in-law lived here for quite some time and so I think it could be a good thing,” said Emily Vickery, resident.

The more than 40 acre campground will have a floating water park with inflatables, slides, and floating cabanas. The inflatable water park will be the first of its kind along Lake Hartwell. Off shore, there will be other fun things too. “They’re talking about multiple things like glamping, just general camp sites, tent camping, opportunities to have little mini cabins. We’re even talking about putting up yurts that people can camp out of, as well as tree houses,” Nelson said.

The campground will be open to the public, but people will have to pay for the attractions. Some frequent park-goers aren’t too happy about the potential traffic this could bring.

“You get too many people here, you can’t enjoy yourself,” said Paul Nichols, park-goer. 7-News also asked Nelson if this will cost taxpayers, and he said there will not be an impact, but it will be good for the County’s tourism.

“There will be some income that will come out of this for the county in the lease agreement,” Nelson said. While this project has been in the works for nearly two years, Anderson County hopes the new development will finally give life back to the once idle park.
“I would love to see some development here,” Vickery said. “If we can garner business and bring folks to our community and bring them here for recreation opportunity, we certainly prefer that over any other thing,” Nelson added.

Nelson said the project should start within the next six weeks, and they expect it to be completed by April of 2021.

Anderson County is seeking public comment about the project through September 9th. They will have a public presentation on August 27th at the Anderson Civic Center beginning at 4:30 p.m.
